When my partner and I went to dine at the Unique Spice in the quiet high street of Burnham, they were unaware of our visit which allowed us to have an unbiased opinion.

On entry we were greeted by our waiter for the evening and shown to our table. Unique Spice certainly lives up to its name, as it felt like home from home with a warm and relaxing atmosphere. The décor, lighting and music were chosen well and helped to create the pleasant atmosphere which is fully licensed and air conditioned.

While looking at the menu, we were offered a wide range of drinks and complimentary poppadums with a choice of six sauces, one being the chef’s secret recipe, which included chopped onion and mint sauce.

With such an extensive menu it was difficult to choose our starter, but our waiter kindly suggested trying the chef’s special Kebab Bahar, which was a pancake stuffed with deliciously spiced lamb cooked with another secret recipe, along with onion bhajis. Not knowing too much about Indian food, I was dubious about trying the Kebab Bahar, but to my surprise I enjoyed every mouthful.

After our starter, our waiter was more than helpful to recommend another selection from the chef’s specialities for our main course.

I opted for the Chicken Korma but was also convinced the Chicken Bali Churi was the chef’s favourite dish, of which he is most proud. It is a medium to hot dish, cooked with chopped spinach, tamarind, fresh chilli sauces and yoghurt, along with a Chicken Tikka Bhuna, cooked with finely chopped onion and tomatoes in a spicy sauce, accompanied by Bombay Aloo, Pilau rice and a garlic and plain naan bread.

The meal came up steaming hot and was really delicious. Overall, the restaurant was well presented, with a good atmosphere, brilliant service and a good value extensive menu.

Unique Spice have a variety of special offers. They have a quick lunch Monday-Friday from noon to 2.30pm with one traditional dish, rice or naan, and hot drink for £6.95. On Sunday there’s a buffet lunch from noon to 3pm – have as much as you like from a wide selection of delicacies for £8.50 (children £5.50).
